Course Structure

TV Production runs for ten weeks - six weeks in training and a four-week production phase on location - and culminates in a TV show for broadcast on Channel 31. Students will learn the basics of television production, network with industry professionals, attain accreditation in select production units, and have their own work broadcast on C31.

Run in association with C31, TV Production focusses on ‘real-world’ television production and broadcast skills. The course provides an introduction to the fundamental skills required to produce video content to be broadcast on television.

Aimed at entry-level practitioners, TV Production runs for 10 weeks and will see the production of a half hour TV program for broadcast on C31 developed and produced by the team. Participants will get to work at the C31 studios and on location shoots. They will then pitch program concepts to an industry panel including the C31 Programming Team.

TV Production will be delivered by experienced TV producers and technicians from Melbourne’s broadcast community. The 10- week intensive will include planning, pre-production, production, copyright law, multi-camera switching, sound, lighting, post-production, programming, hosting and presenting, marketing and multiplatform delivery.

The course provides an intensive, informative and hands-on learning environment for anyone interested in entering the television broadcast industry, particularly those keen to develop new programs that bridge current broadcast technologies with digital TV and the web. Students work in groups to develop and pitch ideas, research and write scripts, plan and prepare for location and studio shoots, cast presenters, direct recordings, record interviews, record images and sound and edit the footage.

The first part of the course concentrates on program development of a series concept for broadcast on C31, simultaneously gaining the  technical skills and procedural knowledge needed to produce for television. Students will learn the skills required to use cameras,  microphones and lights, both in the field and in the studio. In the second part of the course, small teams will extend their skills and  knowledge to produce field-based video segments for a half hour pilot episode. These segments will be edited and inserted into the studio-based production, which will be recorded in a simulated live situation and broadcast across Melbourne.
