Certificate III in Screen (CUF30101) - Documentary Production

This course is nationally accredited training issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Youth Allowance/Austudy/ABSTUDY approved.

Certificate III in Screen  - Documentary Production is an intensive practical course focusing on skill development in all aspects of single digital video production, based on professional film industry models.

The course will:

  • provide accredited training for people pursuing a career in film and television;
  • provide skills and knowledge to independently undertake all aspects of single camera documentary projects across a broad scope of skills in the stages of  development, production and post production;
  • promote professional work practices through project-based learning and networking opportunities.

Designed for students with little or no experience in video production, this course is an intensive, hands-on introduction to the fundamental skills required to make short films, focusing on the documentary genre. Students develop and pitch documentary ideas, research and write scripts, plan and prepare for a shoot, conduct interviews, record images and sound, and edit footage into a short Documentary for a cinema screening. Practical workshops taught by current industry professionals have been designed to develop skills that students can consolidate through the experience of devising and producing an independent documentary project.

Course Structure

The Certificate III in Screen – Documentary Production is full-time (Monday to Thursday) taught over 12 weeks with a total of 288 contact hours.

The first part of the course concentrates on familiarising students with the equipment. Through practical workshops students will learn the skills required to use cameras, microphones, lights and edit suites. In the second part of the course students extend their skills and knowledge to develop and produce their documentary projects.

CUFAIR02A Conduct an interview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare and conduct an interview for broadcast.

CUFCAM01A Set up and operate a basic video camera
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set up and operate a basic video camera and equipment for use in small media productions which may not be intended for commercial sale.

CUFEDT02A Prepare material and documents for editing
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare the materials and documents needed during the editing process for any screed based production. Materials and documents are prepared whether using film, video or digital media in the editing process.

CUFEDT05A Operate a non-linear editing system
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a non-linear editing system for the editing of digital media for any screen based production. Film and/or video may have been used in the production phase and digitised for the editing process.

CUFGEN01A Develop and apply industry knowledge
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to access, increase and update knowledge of the film, television, radio and multimedia industry, including the role of different industry sectors, and the impacts of changing technology. This knowledge underpins effective performance in all sectors.

CUFPOP04A Compile a daily production schedule/running sheet
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce a daily production schedule/running sheet for any production within the cultural industries.

CUFSAF01A Follow health, safety and security procedures
This unit describes the skills and knowledge which everyone in the workplace must have in order to work safely. It covers a range of industry contexts involving a variety of different conditions and hazards.

CUFWRT05A Write content and/or copy
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to write content and/or copy for use in such items as advertisements, station and other promotions, sponsorship announcements, community service announcements and any other form of industrial writing for any production within the cultural industries.

CUSRAD01A Collect and organise information
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify, collect, organise and provide information to be evaluated for a variety of purposes. It does not cover the skills needed for a formal research project. If these are required, see the unit Conduct research.

CUFIMA03A Create 2D digital animation
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use digital animation techniques and industry standard software to create 2D animation for a range of media applications within the cultural industries.

ICAITU126A Use advanced features of computer applications
This unit defines the competency required to use computer applications to their full capacity, employing all advanced features as required for productions within the cultural industries. This unit is imported from the information technology training package, with necessary changes made to the range of variables and evidence guide statements ensuring its relevance to the cultural industries.

Entry Requirements

The course is open to all Australian residents 18 years and over. There are no technical or skill-based prerequisites, however priority is given to applicants who demonstrate good communication skills, an active interest in documentary filmmaking, some industry experience and computer literacy. All applicants are interviewed.

Once an application form is completed and a deposit is paid an interview time will be given. The interview is an opportunity to clarify any issues about Accredited Training at OPEN CHANNEL and to determine applicants’ suitability for enrolment.

Cost & Enrollment Form

The course fee is $4,000, plus $500 refundable equipment bond

A $1000 course deposit is payable on enrolment to secure an interview, and fully refundable if you are not selected into the course.
