Our highly popular weekend course introduces beginner filmmakers to the complete process of digital filmmaking.
This intensive, practical workshop takes you through the basics of shooting a short drama script, and allows you to perform every role (including acting) on set.
You will learn:
- Phases of production
- Crew roles and responsibilities
- Interpreting and preparing a script for shooting
- Camera, lighting and sound fundamentals
- Directing actors and crew
- Final Cut Pro (editing) basics
Who should do this course?
Excellent for beginners interested in filmmaking; wanting an overview of the production process and some hands-on experience to get started.
Where can I go after this course?
After completing this course, participants will have acquired the basic knowledge and skills required to make a digital film or video content for the web.

Tutor
Helen Gaynor
Helen has been a director in documentary and drama for more than 20 years. After graduating from Swinburne Film and Television school, she was trained by ABC TV where she worked for several years, directing and producing everything from The 7.30 Report to Countdown.
Her drama credits include The D-Generation, A Country Practice, Neighbours, Home and Away, Big Sky, High Fliers, Something in the Air, and MDA.
She has produced, written and directed several documentaries including Impunidad, which won the Chris Award at Columbus Film Festival and a Silver Star at Chicago Film Festival; The Election of the Century, nominated for UN Peace Prize; For the Defence; A Little Inconvenience; Nurses; Welcome 2 My Deaf World and Community Cop.
Her most recent documentary series, Last Chance Saloon, has been nominated for a 2010 Logie Award for Outstanding Factual Program.

RACHAEL THOMPSON
After graduating from film school with the Best Film award, Rachael has since worked on Australia Network’s educational television program 'Nexus', on independent documentaries for ABC, SBS, BBC and National Geographic and as a producer on ABC radio. She has been working as a leader and coordinator of filmmaking workshops for young people, adults and specialist groups across Australia since 2004.
